I particularly love being in the front or the back of the subway. Here is the view of the subway station and the interior of the conductor’s cab in a Line 1 subway train.
Check out the old-fashioned black telephone on the counter–it’s not quite what I expected to see in 2008!

Woaw! Did you have special access to the conductor’s room??

No, the conductor’s cab is locked from the passenger side, but there’s a clear window that allows you to see into the cab.

Nice action take on the conductor’s booth.
I found that a lot of instances in Beijing where hardware [or hard construction & technical skills] are new & near first-world status whereas their “software” [or soft service & communications skills] remains “pre-Industrial” …
Perhaps, the latter are still relegated directly to only the boss / department head cadre pays the wages?

Jetso: I can’t say that I have noticed the difference that you point out before, but with this particular train I bet the new trains have state -of-the-art equipment both hard and software. But this train and subway track are fairly old–maybe it’s hard to upgrade.
In New York it’s very similar, the subway system itself is about a hundred years old and some of the tunnels and switches are impossible to update to current standards.
